Using your talent to help others is the basis behind The Art Without Boundaries Association™. Their mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with brain disorders including Autism and Alzheimers through MnemeTherapy®. MnemeTherapy® stimulates changes in the brain through activities such as panting, singing, and story telling.
Penn’s Place is proud to announce that our very own painter, Donna Teleis, is now a member of The Art Without Boundaries Association™. Donna travels throughout the state of Delaware helping others by spreading her passion for painting and art.
“I was born in Aiken, South Carolina, and we moved to Wilmington, Delaware when I was 7 years old. Being a kid who loved horses, and also loved to draw and paint, I was always drawing horses. I also spent many years helping our neighbor paint wooden Christmas Ornaments.
While I started in college as an Art Major, I soon changed to Animal Science. I was not happy having people tell me that there was a right and wrong way to draw or paint! I love animals, especially horses, so I went to the other end of the campus and got my degree in Animal Science.
I spent many years working on several horse farms and eventually ended up at the University of
Pennsylvania, New Bolton Center, where I worked for 15 years in Equine Research. All the while my Art was in the background, occasionally doing things for friends.
One day a friend noticed some work I had done and started bugging me to do more. I did, and realized again how much I loved it. I started my own side business as an artist. One day I was searching the internet and found Art Without Boundaries and thought it looked like a great way to use my talents to help others. It certainly is a rewarding experience! It is great to see the smiles and pride the therapy brings to those who are willing to give it a try.”
